Laos
Laos is a friendly, welcoming slice of old-time Southeast Asia. You can't quite call it "undiscovered", but relative to Vietnam and Thailand it is far less touristed. Laos is easily a favorite of most travelers in the area, and we heartily agree!
NOTE: We only spent one week in Laos and most of that time was in Luang Prabang. You'll have to look elsewhere for comprehensive information.

Random Thoughts and Tips
- The fast boat down the Mekong from Chiang Khong to Luang Prabang was dangerous and unpleasant, and it still took the entire day. Doing it again, I would opt for the 2-day "slow boat" option. If you do take the fast boat, have your ear plugs handy.
- We had a gorgeous room with friendly hosts at the Ratana Guest House in Luang Prabang. I think it was about $12 for a double with private bath. Extremely clean and fresh.
- The flight from Luang Prabang to Vientiane on Lao Airlines was on-time, smooth, and quick.
- Don't eat the "deer steak."
- Been on your feet a lot? Shell out the couple of dollars for the hour-long foot massage at the professional looking place on the main river walk in Vientiane.
- Laos was one of only three countries on our trip where ATM cards didn't work. Have plenty of Thai Baht or US dollars on hand.
